We are happy to announce that Inspector IT will be a sponsor at the upcoming Chicago Day of DotNetNuke on October 2nd, 2010. We are thrilled to be a contributor and to be a part of this free event, serving all those in the community who are passionate about, or simply wish to learn more about, the DotNetNuke platform.

In addition to being a sponsor, Inspector IT’s very own Antonio Chagoury is in the speaker line-up, giving a presentation under the “Mobile Development” track.
Day of DotNetNuke® is a free event serving those who are interested in learning about the world’s largest .NET based open source framework, DotNetNuke®.

This event attracts many industry experts who are willing to share knowledge and experience about DotNetNuke® and it creates in-person networking opportunity for community members around the world.

The St. Louis and Chicago DotNetNuke® User Groups have teamed up and are proud to announce the second Day of DotNetNuke® in the U.S and the first in the Midwest region.

About Antonio’s Session

Smartphone-enable your DotNetNuke Apps with jQTouch & jQuery

So you built a great DotNetNuke Module, but now you want to make its data and functionality available to mobile users with a smart-phone device such as an iPhone, Android or Blackberry.

Well, you’re in luck, because in this session Antonio will show you how easy it is to build a mobile web app that consumes REST web services with a little client side scripting, the jQTouch framework and jQuery.

On Wednesday, June 16th 2010 the Capital DotNetNuke User Group will be hosting the second official DotNetNuke Hackathon.

The previous Hackathon held in Orlando last month focused on the DotNetNuke MVP design pattern. This month’s Hackathon in Washington, DC, will focus on developing compelling visual user interfaces and user experiences. The theme is appropriately labeled as "Visual DotNetNuke."

Inspector IT principals and staff will be at the event to meet and greet the great folks of the local DotNetNuke community. Inspector IT is also excited to be the meeting sponsor providing food and beverages.

What is a Hackaton?

Hackathons are developer events with a goal of increasing developer knowledge on a specific technology aspect in a casual, collaborative environment. They are also designed to encourage participation by people who are not familiar with the technology, basically providing them with an immersive quick start.
Hackathon Events are:

built around a single programming concept (for example: DotNetNuke MVP Pattern)

encourage participation locally (at event site) and remotely

broadcast online

provide materials and dev environment setup guidelines ahead of time

allow anybody to participate

are peer-judged by the Hackathon participants

have one or more winners who earn the title "Hackmaster"

have great prizes for winners and runners up

require all submissions to be Open Source with MIT license

Visual DotNetNuke Hackathon

The first official DotNetNuke Hackathon was held in Orlando last month and it focused on building DotNetNuke module using the MVP design pattern.

Next week, on June 16th, we have a fantastic Hackathon planned, and this time, the theme is "Visual DotNetNuke."

The "Visual DotNetNuke" Hackathon focuses on building modules for DotNetNuke. The launchpad for the event will be the montly meeting of the Capital DotNetNuke Users Group in the Washington, DC metro area.

Developers have an abundance of resources available to help them better understand DotNetNuke module development. Resources such as blogs, videos and books go into great detail on module architecture, the data layer and interacting with the DotNetNuke Core API. However, when it comes to developing DotNetNuke modules with rich, engaging and contemporary user interfaces, the resources are few and far between.

The "Visual DotNetNuke" Hackathon aims to give developers the knowledge and tools to create great-looking DotNetNuke modules that engage users and create a delightful user experience.

You can learn more about this upcoming Hackathon on the official website.

The speakers at this event are Nik Kalyani, Founder and CEO of HyperCrunch and Joe Brinkman, Co-founder and Technical Fellow of DotNetNuke Corporation.

Tag Clouds are a great way to provide your web users with stylish Web 2.0 navigation components and are highly efficient when it comes to enhancing your SEO (Search Engine Optimization) efforts.
With Inspector IT’s DNN Universal Tag Cloud™ you can create multiple tag clouds, each customized to semantically depict your content listed alphabetically or by importance. With DNN Universal Tag Cloud™, creating and customizing content tag clouds that enable your users to navigate to the right collection of information has never been easier, setup and configuration is snap!

DNN Universal Tag Cloud has been released and is available on Snowcovered and at the DotNetNuke Marketplace.

A few product reviews have already been sighted in the blogosphere; the response thus far is extremely positive. we look forward to improve on the product and publish an aggressive road map that would ensure multiple releases scheduled through the end of 2009, says Inspector IT CEO Antonio Chagoury

A few quotes from the previously mentioned blog sightings reveal that the functionality exposed by the DNN Universal Tag Cloud has been missing from the DotNetNuke ecosystem and is a welcome addition to Inspector IT’s collection of modules:

A missing “Web 2.0″ element from DotNetNuke is the now-ubiquitous Tag Cloud. Their new Universal Tag Cloud module does most everything you’d expect neatly and easily, says Mamlin of Eguana Solutions.

If you need a tag cloud that has only positive impact on a DNN site, and uses existing technology, this module is definitely the standard one to use, and sets the bar very high. I can already see all kinds of uses for this module on various types of sites, says Will Strohl of RezHub.com.

Until DNN core blog module adds this in this is a good alternative to rolling your own, which can be a pain. The best part is you can make clouds for any modules that tie into the search provider. So if you are using Ventrian’s articles module you could now easily make a tag cloud for all your articles using this module. Lots of possibilities and lots of ways to use it, says Dylan Barber of CodeMyPantsOff.com

Inspector IT, Inc. CEO & Chief Software Architect, Antonio Chagoury, will be presenting at the OpenForce / DevConnections conference in Las Vegas, NV.

DotNetNuke OpenForce ‘08 is the premier North American DotNetNuke event in 2008. Co-located with other top Microsoft technology-focused conferences at DevConnections, this is a can’t-miss conference for serious DotNetNuke developers, users, administrators, designers and vendors. Conference highlights include 20 speakers, 22 in-depth sessions, panel discussions, networking receptions, an exciting expo hall.

As an added bonus, OpenForce ‘08 attendees can also attend sessions at any other DevConnections conference in progress at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, the OpenForce ‘08 conference location. These conferences include: Asp.net Connections, SQL Server Connections, Visual Studio.net Connections, and SharePoint Connections.
Information and schedules on Antonio Chagoury’s talk can be found on theOpenForce web site, as well asDevConnections‘. Here an excerpt:

Done in 60 minutes: Build a Custom Membership Provider

The Provider Model is a design pattern introduced in .net to provide a simple way to extend API functionality. DotNetNuke uses this architecture to allow some of its core functionality to be replaced without modifying core code. In this session Antonio Chagoury will give you a high-level overview of the core Membership Provider (ASPNet Membership) and demonstrate how to build and configure your own custom provider.

Inspector IT would like to hear from you and meet you. If you will be attending OpenForce this year, Antonio will be happy to talk to you and discuss the great potentials of DotNetNuke, and how to put it to good use in your enterprise.

If you are a developer and like me you mostly develop data driven applications, then I am sure that you have had to write a couple of paging functions and controls. I very rarely use the asp.net datagrid control as I find it bloated and harder to customize its UI. Instead I use the handy and much lighter weigth datalist and repeater controls.

Of course the drawback with the afore mentioned controls is that they do not come equipped with an integrated paging control as the datagrid does, but the folks at DotNetNuke did a fine job at remedying the situation: they built a re-usable Paging Control. If you are a DotNetNuke module developer, you should definitely consider using it instead of building your own. This is exactly what I did, and I am now sharing my experience since finding these "nuggets" of useful built-in functions and controls within DotNetNuke is more like "treasure hunting"!

First and foremost, I have to note that the DotNetNuke paging control does not manage the data, in fact it does not even bind to a source. All that the DotNetNuke Paging Control does is generate a paging interface, and builds the paging links based on some key data that you feed into it at run time. The information you provide control at runtime is as follows:

TotalRecords
Once you have filled your collection object, get its row count and feed it to this property of the control

PageSize
Define the size of each page (i.e. the number of records you wish to display on each page)

CurrentPage
Get the current page index and feed it into this property (i.e. Once the pager initiates the paging, you can get the pageindex from the querystring called CurrentPage)

Querystring
If your module needs its own custom querystring parameters, feed them into this property, the paging links will append them for you so that your data continues to load normally)

The following is a code example for filling the the properties mentioned above:

ctlPagingControl.TotalRecords = TotalRecords
ctlPagingControl.PageSize = PageSize
ctlPagingControl.CurrentPage = PageIndex

The following is a screen shot of the generated Paging Control:

Putting it all together

Let’s start by adding the control to your UI page. First we must register the WebControl assembly (DotNetNuke.UI.WebControls) at the top of your page, and then add the control to a location of the page of your choice. The code example below assumes you are adding this paging control below your datalist/repeater:

<%@ Register TagPrefix="dnn" Namespace="DotNetNuke.UI.WebControls" Assembly="DotNetNuke" %>
<asp:Datalist ID="Datalist1" runat="server"></asp:Datalist>
<dnn:PagingControl id="PagingControl1" runat="server"></dnn:PagingControl>

The next (and last) thing to do is stitch the control to your data source.

First let me explain that there are two ways (that I know of) you can page your data:

Via Stored Procedure or Data Access:

This is the most labor intensive, but will give you better performance. Basically you page the data in the stored procedure itself by passing the PageIndex and the PageSize into it so that it return and fills your collection with just the rows that you need.

Via Use the PagedDataSource Class

This class enables you to page the entire source with much less code, however, all the rows are fetched at each page request, regardless of which page you are on (Unless you do some additional data caching in your asp.net code, in which case you are ok).

For simplicity’s sake, the example I provide below implements this methodology.

Private Sub BindDatalist()
Dim PageSize = 20 'Display 20 items per page
'Get the currentpage index from the url parameter
If Request.QueryString("currentpage") IsNot Nothing Then
_CurrentPage = Request.QueryString("currentpage").ToString
Else
_CurrentPage = 1
End If
'Call you data layer and get the data you need to bind to the datalist
Dim objDataController As New YouDataController
Dim objCollection As List(Of YourObject) = objDataController.GetData()
'Fill the PagedDataSource object's datasource property with your collection
Dim objPagedDataSource As New PagedDataSource
objPagedDataSource.DataSource = objCollection
If Me.PageSize > 0 Then
objPagedDataSource.PageSize = PageSize
objPagedDataSource.CurrentPageIndex = _CurrentPage - 1
objPagedDataSource.AllowPaging = True
End If
'Bind the datalist
dlWhoIsOnline.DataSource = objPagedDataSource
dlWhoIsOnline.DataBind()
'Show/hide the pager based on on the number of rows fetched vs pagesize
If PageSize = 0 OrElse objDataController.Count <= PageSize Then
ctlPagingControlBottom.Visible = False
Else
ctlPagingControlBottom.Visible = True
With ctlPagingControlBottom
.TotalRecords = objDataController.Count
.PageSize = PageSize
.CurrentPage = _CurrentPage
.TabID = TabId
End With
End If
End Sub

You should now be able to run your project and test the paging control.

We have been at it for a couple of months, but it was well worth the wait. We have added a few nice features that we are sure you will love and will make you wander how you were able to live without it for this long.

Additionally, we improved the manageability of the module by separating the Map Points Management interface from the Map’s Settings. The UI is much less cluttered as a result of this change.

I could go on writing pages explaining all the changes, so instead, here is a bullet list of the changes and fixes in this new version: (Make sure you check out the demo too!)

Added GeoRSS support

Added a point attribute to allow you to load the location’s weather conditions in the balloon tip by default

Added settings to allow you to manipulate the balloon tip including, background color, size, border, border color & style

List of points is now a floating window, which you can move, close, minimize and restore

Fixed some minor FireFox rendering issues

Fixed issue when an apostrophy is entered in both the title and description of each point

Much more!
